Marie-Laure Cartier

Partner

Marie-Laure Cartier has been admitted to the Paris Bar for over twenty-five years. She focuses her practice on civil and commercial litigation, as well as domestic and international arbitration.

She advises and represents French and international clients in the prevention and resolution of complex disputes, from the negotiation of key contractual provisions through the pre-litigation and litigation stages, to the enforcement of court judgments and arbitral awards. Her approach is focused on developing litigation strategies tailored to her clients’ commercial, financial and reputational objectives.

Her practice encompasses a broad range of civil and commercial matters, with particular expertise in disputes arising from complex commercial agreements, including contractual liability, breach of contract, termination, renegotiation and hardship. She also advises on disputes relating to distribution agreements, including franchise, commercial agency, licensing and subcontracting arrangements, as well as sale and purchase agreements involving option agreements, invalidity of contracts, latent defects, conformity, defective products and contractual non-performance.

Marie-Laure also has extensive experience in corporate disputes, particularly post-acquisition litigation involving earn-out mechanisms, purchase price adjustments, representations and warranties, and fraudulent misrepresentation. She regularly acts in shareholder disputes relating to share transfers, put and call options, and business valuation issues, as well as in proceedings concerning directors’ liability, including in the context of shareholder activism.

She has significant experience in urgent proceedings, both inter partes and ex parte, before state courts and arbitral tribunals. This enables her to secure interim and conservatory measures within particularly demanding timeframes to protect her clients’ rights effectively.

Marie-Laure also sits as arbitrator in both domestic and international arbitration proceedings.

Committed to sharing her expertise, she taught dispute resolution for several years at the Institut de Droit des Affaires of Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas and has delivered numerous seminars and training sessions on the reform of French contract law.

Before co-founding Cartier Meyniel in January 2020, Marie-Laure practised with Clifford Chance and Jones Day in Paris, São Paulo and New York.

Marie-Laure is a member of Droit & Procédure and of the International Law Association (ILA).

She works fluently in both French and English and is also fluent in Portuguese.
